Approvals: VW 508 00 / 509 00
The VW 508 00 / 509 00 oil spec is NOT backwards compatible to older VW oil specifications and older engine applications. If VW 508 00 / 509 00 oil specification is used in an older VW engine, irreversible engine damage will occur. Always consult your service manual and confirm the specific engine oil specification and oil requirements for your engine application.
There is a lot of discussion on weather VW has made the right call to use 0w-20 weight oil in its new EA888 3B-cycle engines. What is different with the EA888 3B? Basically the intake valves close earlier (before bottom dead center) when the load is low to be more fuel efficient. When at higher loads the valves close as they do in most engines at bottom dead center. So as far as we know thanks to Dr. Ralph Budack making these design changes it is best to use 0w-20 in your EA888 3B-cycle engine.
