Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between a BOV (blow-off valve) and a BPV (bypass valve)?
A BOV vents pressurized charge air to atmosphere when you lift off the throttle — producing the characteristic turbo flutter or whoosh sound. A BPV (or recirculating valve) recirculates this air back into the intake tract before the turbocharger — no sound, but maintains mass airflow sensor accuracy on MAF-equipped vehicles. GFB's Hybrid BOVs allow the user to adjust the ratio of atmospheric venting to recirculation — tuning the sound level while maintaining compatibility with factory MAF-based ECUs.
Will an atmospheric BOV cause issues on my MAF-based WRX?
A full atmospheric BOV on a MAF-equipped WRX (most stock ECU builds) causes the ECU to see the vented air as unmeasured flow, leading to a rich condition on boost re-engagement — sometimes causing stumbles or stalling. GFB's Hybrid BOV addresses this by allowing partial recirculation to maintain MAF accuracy while still providing some atmospheric venting for sound. On a re-tuned WRX, a full atmospheric BOV is compatible.
