What Is Track Day? A Canadian Beginner's Guide to HPDE
If you've ever watched racing on TV and thought "I want to try that" — track days are how you start. HPDE (High Performance Driver Education) events are organized track sessions open to everyday street cars, designed for drivers who want to learn performance driving in a controlled, safe environment.
Canada has an excellent HPDE scene across every major province. Here's everything you need to know to attend your first one.
What Actually Happens at an HPDE Event
- Registration and tech inspection — car checked for safety. Most street cars pass easily.
- Driver classification — Novice, Intermediate, or Advanced run groups. Novice has a mandatory instructor.
- Classroom sessions — covering rules, flagging system, passing zones, and driving concepts.
- Run sessions — each group on track in rotation, typically 20–25 minute sessions, 3–4 sessions per day.
Canadian HPDE Venues Worth Knowing
- Ontario: Canadian Tire Motorsport Park, Grand Bend Motorplex, Shannonville Motorsport Park, Toronto Motorsports Park
- Quebec: Circuit ICAR (Mirabel), Mécaglisse
- Alberta: Castrol Raceway, Springbank Raceway
- British Columbia: Mission Raceway Park, The Ridge Motorsports Park
What Your Car Needs to Pass Tech
- Brakes in good condition — most common reason for tech failures. Hawk HP Plus pads and fresh brake fluid are the standard pre-track preparation.
- No fluid leaks
- Wheels properly torqued — bring a torque wrench
- No loose items in the cabin — floor mats must be removed
- Helmet — SA2015 or newer, rentals often available
What Makes the Biggest Difference on Track
- Brake pads and fresh fluid: Hawk HP Plus front pads and a DOT 4 or 5.1 brake flush. Stock pads fade within 2–3 hot laps.
- Tires: More grip changes everything.
- Alignment: Proper front negative camber improves front grip and reduces tire scrub.
- Suspension: KW coilovers or Bilstein upgrades — adjustable for track and street use.
