Best Performance Upgrades for Toyota GR86 and Subaru BRZ in Canada
The Toyota GR86 and Subaru BRZ (ZD8, 2022+) are the most driver-focused sports cars under $40,000 in Canada. The second generation resolved the original's low-power complaints with a proper 228 hp FA24 engine. Here's the upgrade path, all available at MyPartsGuy.ca in CAD.
Why the GR86/BRZ Is Different to Modify
These cars reward chassis and handling modifications more than power. The FA24 is naturally aspirated with limited bolt-on power ceiling — getting more from the chassis delivers more tangible improvement than chasing extra horsepower. Suspension and brakes first, exhaust for sound, intake as a supporting modification.
Suspension — Start Here
Eibach Pro-Kit springs for the ZD8 drop approximately 25mm with progressive spring rate — body roll reduction and improved cornering balance are immediately noticeable.
For maximum chassis performance, KW Variant 3 coilovers for the ZD8 are among the platform's most popular track day upgrades. Bilstein B16 coilovers are the value alternative with 16-position adjustment.
Brake Pads — Before Any Track Use
Hawk HP Plus front pads are the standard track-day recommendation — work cold for the drive to the track and maintain bite through sustained hard braking. Many drivers run HP Plus on all four corners. For street-only use: Hawk HPS 5.0.
Exhaust
Borla's GR86/BRZ systems deliver an aggressive naturally-aspirated flat-four note that rewards the car's rev-happy character. MagnaFlow carries applications at a lower price point.
Cold Air Intake
aFe Power's Takeda intake for the GR86 and BRZ — expect 4–8 hp with an immediately noticeable induction sound improvement. K&N's application is the value alternative.
