Best Performance Upgrades for Ford Mustang GT in Canada

The Ford Mustang GT remains one of Canada's favourite performance cars — and for good reason. The 5.0L Coyote V8 (S550/S650) is a strong foundation for bolt-on modifications, and the aftermarket support is second to none. Whether you're driving an S550 (2015–2023) or the new S650 (2024+), this guide covers the most effective performance upgrades available in Canada, all priced in CAD with no duties at MyPartsGuy.ca.

Stage 1: Sound and Breathing (Under $1,500)

Cold Air Intake

The 5.0L Coyote responds well to improved airflow. An aFe Power Momentum intake is one of the most popular S550 Mustang upgrades — significant intake sound improvement (that classic 5.0 induction growl becomes much more pronounced), and 10–20 hp gains at the wheels when paired with a tune. The K&N 57-Series is a slightly more budget-friendly alternative with proven gains on the 5.0L platform.

Cat-Back Exhaust

This is the upgrade most Mustang GT owners do first — and rightly so. The 5.0L sounds incredible with the right exhaust, and it's one of the most noticeable improvements you can make to the driving experience.

Borla's S-Type is the definitive Mustang GT exhaust — deep, aggressive, and unmistakably Borla at wide-open throttle with surprisingly civil manners at cruise. The ATAK is louder — track-day loud. Borla Touring is for drivers who want an improvement without turning every stoplight into a statement.

MagnaFlow's Street Series is the value pick — a genuine sound improvement with a deep muscle-car rumble at a lower price point than Borla. For Canadian buyers on a budget who still want a quality exhaust, MagnaFlow is the recommendation.

Approximate Costs in Canada:

  • aFe Momentum intake S550: ~$550–$700 CAD
  • Borla S-Type cat-back S550: ~$1,800–$2,200 CAD
  • MagnaFlow Street Series S550: ~$1,100–$1,500 CAD

Stage 2: Handling (Under $3,000)

Lowering Springs

The S550 Mustang sits high from the factory — lowering it not only improves the look dramatically but lowers the centre of gravity for better cornering. Eibach Pro-Kit springs are one of the most popular Mustang GT modifications, dropping the car approximately 28mm front and rear with a progressive spring rate that maintains daily driveability on Canadian roads.

For Canadian buyers planning to use their Mustang as a daily driver through spring and fall (most GT owners store their car in winter), Eibach's compliance-oriented tune is ideal. If you're primarily a track day driver, H&R Sport Springs offer a slightly more aggressive drop and stiffer rate.

Coilovers

For full adjustability, KW Variant 3 coilovers are the premium choice for S550/S650 Mustang GT. KW's stainless steel construction is ideal for Canadian conditions (no winter storage for dedicated track cars), and their V3 tune for the Mustang platform is well-regarded. Bilstein B16 is the value-conscious alternative with excellent monotube damping and 16-position adjustment.

Approximate Costs in Canada:

  • Eibach Pro-Kit S550 Mustang GT: ~$490–$560 CAD
  • KW Variant 3 S550: ~$3,200–$3,800 CAD
  • Bilstein B16 S550: ~$1,600–$2,000 CAD

Stage 3: Brakes

Performance Brake Pads

The S550 GT's Brembo brakes (Performance Package) are excellent from the factory. The base Mustang GT's brakes are adequate for street use but benefit meaningfully from better pad compound.

Hawk HPS 5.0 is the recommended street upgrade — improved cold bite, better fade resistance under spirited driving, low dust. For track day use, Hawk HP Plus front pads are the choice — they work cold enough to drive to the track and handle sustained hard braking much better than street compounds.

S650 Mustang (2024+) Notes

The S650 Mustang launched in 2024 and the aftermarket is rapidly expanding. We already carry Eibach and Borla for confirmed S650 applications — use our Shop by Car tool and select your year to see what's confirmed for fitment.

Build Order Recommendation

  1. Cat-back exhaust — biggest perceived impact per dollar, no tune required
  2. Cold air intake — works with stock tune, noticeably better with a tune
  3. Lowering springs — transforms the car's look and cornering behaviour
  4. Brake pad upgrade — before any track use
  5. Coilovers — if you want full adjustability over springs
